Drummer Clyde Stubblefield is known as “the original” because of all the hits he cut with James Brown — for example, he’s the drummer on “Cold Sweat,” and he played that famous four-bar break on “The Funky Drummer”. For this album, we took hin to a recording studio for one hour and he played a dozen grooves, five minutes each, all by himself. Then Leo Sidran, with the help of Hector Coulon (the elusive Andoran producer,) choreographed all these grooves with original lyrics, melodies, instrumentation and song forms and the result is not only a musical biography of Clyde, told in his own words and beat patterns but, in Clyde’s phrase, it is “the first time anybody ever actually captured me…Leo Sidran is a genius.”
