Because his first notoriety came as a pop singer in Britain, many people don’t realize that Georgie Fame is one of our prominent jazz vocalists and lyricists — he has written lyrics to dozens of important solos by Chet Baker and Charlie Parker and Horace Silver … the list goes on and on. We wanted to capture the poet in New York (just as Federico Garcia Lorca did some sixty years earlier) in the traditional way — live in the studio, no overdubbing, just straight-ahead swinging. This album won the Billie Holiday Prize from the French Academie du Jazz.
