Back in the late sixties and early seventies, it was virtually impossible to find a decent piano, and even if you could find one, it was rarely in tune and unable to be heard over the increasing volume of the electric guitars. Hence the arrival of the Wurlitzer electric piano, pioneered by Ray Charles; it became the weapon of choice for keyboard players. Of course the Hammond B3 organ had also been around for several decades, and together, these became ubiquitous for anybody wanting to play groove jazz. This album is a tribute to those times, and to the composers (like Sonny Clark, Donald Byrd and Eddie Harris) who created the era’s signature sound.
