“Partie d’Australie pour étudier le saxophone au Berklee Collège, Jody Sternberg a remplacé Sky Edwards lors d’une tournée de Morcheeba, puis s’est établie en France, où elle a collaboré avec Arthur H, Marc Collin et Olivier Temime. Curieux sauts de puce, qui aboutissent à cet album où elle chante, accompagnée par Alain Jean-Marie au Piano. Or, Castles in the Sand révèle bien plus qu’une interprète, au demeurant exceptionnelle, du genre à vous saisir la gorge en trois notes et à évoluer en funambules sur votre vague à l’âme. Jody est aussi une autrice et compositrice don’t les textes oscillent entre mirages heureux et assauts d’anxiété, nostalgie aigüe et terreur froide. Atour de ces bijoux troubles passent des standards, tous de haute tenue, un trait d’humour noir (Suicide Is Plainless qui dans M*A*S*H, accompagnait la tordante débandade du dentiste) et, pour nous achever tout crus, As Times Goes By, l’ai qui réunit Bogart et Ingrid Bergman dans Casablanca – mais en français s’il vous plait : “ On dit je t’aime, je t’aime/Et on redit je t’aime…” C’en est trop. À cette belle brune à profil inca, il ne nous reste qu’à murmurer, aussi éperdus, las et épris de Bogie : “ Sing it again, Jody…” – Louis-Julien Nicolaou 

 “Having left Australia to study saxophone at Berklee College, Jody Sternberg replaced Sky Edwards on a Morcheeba tour, then settled in France, where she collaborated with Arthur H, Marc Collin, and Olivier Temime. Small, curious leaps that lead to this album, on which she sings accompanied by Alain Jean-Marie on piano. Yet Castles in the Sand reveals far more than an exceptional interpreter—though she certainly is one, the kind who grabs you by the throat in three notes and walks a tightrope across your melancholy. Jody is also a songwriter whose lyrics oscillate between happy mirages and surges of anxiety, acute nostalgia and cold dread.  Around these troubled gems drift standards of the highest caliber, a touch of dark humor (“Suicide Is Painless,” which in MASH* underscored the dentist’s hilarious meltdown), and, to finish us off completely, “As Time Goes By,” the tune that brings Bogart and Ingrid Bergman together in Casablanca—but in French, if you please: “They say ‘I love you, I love you’ / And then they say it again…” It’s almost too much. With this beautiful dark-haired woman, her Inca-like profile, all we can do is murmur, just as lost, weary, and smitten as Bogie: “Sing it again, Jody…” —Louis-Julien Nicolaou
