DESCRIPTION

“More Morricone”, a tribute to Ennio Morricone recorded last year in september 2019 at the Studio de Meudon (France).

Ennio Morricone is a film music composer like no other.

His compositions stand out for one reason: one often has the feeling that the film for which the music was composed is a visual illustration of such music, rather than the opposite.

On this matter Pierre Darmon, who conceived this tribute album, recalls the time when he discovered Morricone: « I used to spend my summer vacation in Viareggio, which is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Tuscany. One evening in August 1972 my uncle took me to the open air cinema in Lido di Camaiore. We watched “A Fistful Of Dynamite” by Sergio Leone. I was 13 years old and beyond this superb film I remember having experienced one of my first musical shocks, my first encounter with the music of a sacred monster, Ennio Morricone. »

It is indeed true that approaching Morricone’s work is something sacred, especially because the artists who sign this tribute album, Ferruccio Spinetti and Giovanni Ceccarelli, are Italian. « Ennio Morricone fascinates us for one main raison: once you listen to one of his themes, it sticks in your imagination and in your memory forever. He is a supreme melodist… He is perhaps the greatest Italian composer after Puccini. » (Giovanni Ceccarelli)

Facing with the immensity of Morricone’s work, the first preparatory stage in the realization of this project consisted in choosing the repertoire. Such selection was intended to evoke the Master’s considerable musical spectrum, at the same time not to limit the choice exclusively to well known works. The repertoire selection for album More Morricone is thus the result of a joint work by the artists and the production, as well as by Massimo Cardinaletti, a great film music expert and a close friend of Ennio Morricone.

The second stage in the realization of More Morricone consisted in arranging the selected music with the objective of giving an intimate and respectful rendition of it. As a matter of fact, the audience is often familiar with the orchestral rendition of Morricone’s music.

In this regard Ferruccio Spinetti, who masters the art of undressing the great music standards with the duet Musica Nuda – starring also Petra Magoni – affirms: « When a theme is as beautiful as “Tema D’amore” from Cinema Paradiso, you don’t need a symphonic orchestra because the theme notes alone have the power to communicate an emotion, as one can render with the pure piano/double bass setting. »

Finally, considering that the voice often plays a predominant role in Morricone’s music, Ferruccio Spinetti and Giovanni Ceccarelli invited the extraordinary Belgian singer Chrystel Wautier to perform three songs: Hurry To Me (from film « One Night At Dinner »), My Heart and I (from series « La Piovra »), and Un ami (from film « Blood In The Streets ») which was eventually included by Tarantino in his film « Inglorious Basterds ».

More Morricone is thus a precious and delicate album which sublimates the Master’s music in an intimate and respectful way. This album is signed by two artists who share a 30 years-long friendship and musical collaboration.
